In the state of Lower Saxony, Social Democrats and Christian Democrats are ready to start coalition talks. After the liberal FDP and the Green Party declared their refusal to form a coalition with either party, Stephan Weil from the election-winning SPD initiated talks with CDU top candidate Bernd Althusmann. Both state party committees are bound to approve the coalition negotiations.
While on many issues, the parties will likely be able to find common ground, some differences may prove more difficult to reconcile, mainly in the areas of inclusive education and the treatment of refugees. “We are aiming to build a coalition government by the end of November”, Althusmann confirmed nonetheless.
